Significant (and heartbreaking) moments - Exodus (II) S3

Starbuck, our resident ball of neuroses and unresolved childhood abandonment issues. I love how the writers built up the emotional climax to this scene over 3 episodes. When Leoben has Kara trapped in his imitation of a home, the first time she genuinely smiles is when she thinks Kacey is injured but she wakes up and is fine. There’s just so much going on here.

Firstly, the guilt Kara feels when she finds Kacey. I think she is reminded of her own mother and the way she was somewhat neglected. Though she didn’t abuse Kacey the way her mom did to her, Kara realizes the responsibility she has for Kacey, and she is determined to not come short like her mother did.

Secondly, that smile. It hurts me in so many ways because so far as I recall, Starbuck has never smiled in this way - so full of hope and love. I think she sees Kacey as a sort of salvation, or at the least, someone she can love and care for, whom she doesn’t have to put on any fronts for. There are other people she is this open with, but very few (how about one).

Which leads me on to three: when Kacey’s real mom recognizes her and takes her back, thanking Kara for ‘saving’ her. The way Kara’s face falls, and the slow dawning look of comprehension of the extent to which Leoben has played her - that’s where it really punches you in the gut. Kara has been resisting Leoben all this while, but he finds a crack in her armour and gets through to her. And it is at this precise moment that I think Kara loses all faith in herself.

My brain during the day: Potato, potato, ching chong tomato
My brain at night: I wonder why the Earth was placed exactly here and allowed us to provide a perfect climate to sustain human life.

Do you ever see a picture of a really cute person and think WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO BE SO CUTE?
